Navarasa Dance Theater is a pioneering South-Asian Contemporary Dance Theater company with a wide repertoire of classical and contemporary works inspired by Bharatanatyam and folk dance forms, martial arts (Kalarippayattu), diverse theater and music traditions, aerial dance, yoga and storytelling.
The show, which had its world premiere in Albuquerque, is inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s celebrated film “The Seventh Seal”, in which a battle-weary knight challenges Death to a game of chess to forestall his death. Navarasa’s story is set in a dateless period where the prince of that region has returned from war. Death has come to take his life and the life of a traveling artist. The prince, haunted by his war memories, challenges Death to a game of Snake and Ladder, an ancient Indian game based on the play of karma and the spiritual journey of the human soul. Meanwhile, the artist recalls his mythological traditions and uses his own art to evade his fear of death. Through narrative, movement and music, “Snake and Ladder” explores universal concepts such as death, war and the transcendent power of art.

“Navarasa’s choreography is grounded in traditional Indian dance, but reaches outward. They incorporate modern dance, Indian martial arts, aerial dance, Bollywood’s pop influences — all with an eye for originality and a skillful use of space, sending dancers into eye-catching floor patterns. Embedded are compelling dances: an acrobatic solo up and down a roughly 10-foot-tall wooden column, a sensuous, serpentine duet, a fighting dance with the clash of wooden canes.” — Boston Globe
